MA Partner Jaime Molera and MA Sr. Associate, Policy & Government Affairs Rex Bartlett had the privilege of attending the annual retreat for the Arizona Indian Gaming Association (AIGA) at Hon-Dah Resort and Casino in the beautiful White Mountains. Attendees were able to gather and discuss current issues tribes must address, not only in gaming, but in all the challenges facing Native American communities. Mr. Molera presented an extensive summary of the current Arizona legislative and political landscape. In addition, Rex led a session on the value of the Tribal Gaming Compact and introduced the appointed Arizona Director of Tourism Lisa Urias.

A highlight of the retreat was the Pasqua Yaqui tribe rejoining the organization with the reintroduction of their leadership. AIGA’s continued success and growth is thanks to the community of support they have fostered across the state. OH Predictive Insight founder Mike Nobel presented polling results, which indicated not only are Native Tribes some of the most respected and liked groups in the State, but that Arizonans believe in Tribe’s abilities to regulate gaming better than state ran regulation.

The retreat was a rousing success and tribal and AIGA leaders, attorneys, and lobbyists, and even council staff were able to build connections and a stronger sense of understanding. Efforts like this retreat are crucial in developing the accountability and strategy required to foster future growth.
