City of Phoenix Considers Budget Cuts
The City of Phoenix is now preparing its 2020-21 fiscal year budget for revenue shortfalls due to COVID-19’s effect on local sales taxes. City staff prepared four different budget adjustment scenarios that would make between $26 million and $128 million in cuts. Only the first has been presented in detail to the council, and the city will know if they should begin preparing for the second scenario later this month. The proposed cuts include a hiring freeze, extending reimbursements to the city’s Phoenix Parks and Preserve Initiative fund, eliminating a previously proposed increase to the contingency fund, reducing vehicle replacements for non-public safety vehicles and deferring an annual transfer of $1 million into the public safety stabilization fund. A vote by the council on implementing the $26 million in recommended cuts should occur this coming week.
